History of AndroidAndroid is the mobile operating system from Google that has become the number one platform for Smartphones. Based on the Linux kernel it has managed to obtain the biggest market share in only four years.
The Android platform was released in 2008 marking the entrance of Google in the mobile industry. The appearance of the first iPhone from Apple revolutionized the mobile phone industry and began the Smartphone era, which concentrated on better user interactivity, touch screens and improved features.
The first Android device was the HTC Dream and featured the 1.0 OS. Google has since release many other versions of the platform, each containing new or improved features that added to the functionality of the newer phones. The first version of the OS had its own HTML enabled browser, camera support, YouTube and media players and allowed access to Google services like Maps, Calendar, Sync, Search, Talk, etc.
The 1.1 version improved maps and messaging. Android 1.5 Cupcake brought a virtual keyboard, widgets, video recording and animated screen transitions. The browser now allowed copy and paste and uploads to YouTube and Picassa became available.
The Donut version made searching and camera functions faster, as well as browsing in the already existent Android market; it also implemented voice search and text-to-speech. Éclair 2.0 and 2.1 was the version that brought improvements to the keyboard, camera, Bluetooth, sync and applications. HTML5 was implemented, wallpapers became live and the overall speed of the system.
Froyo’s system became even faster than its predecessor, had Adobe Flash support and made the browser work more like that of a personal computer. The Gingerbread version kept enhancing all the available features for a better user experience and Honeycomb came with multitasking and hardware acceleration, bringing support for multi-core processors.
The Android Ice Cream Sandwich is the version that combines features of Gingerbread and Honeycomb to create a powerhouse operating system that promises nothing less than greatness.
