Mobile Operating SystemsThe mobile phone industry continues to bring new and improved models with every passing year. Companies work continuously on developing better devices to compete with whatever is present on the market and bring increased functionality with every new release.
Mobile operating systems are an integrating part of the smartphones that can be found on the market today. They work in the same way as an operating system works on a computer or laptop, allowing mobile phone users to take advantage of more features in a simpler and very user-friendly way. These platforms are what grant the ‘smart’ attribute to these devices.
The Apple iOS, Google Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile are the most powerful platforms of mid-2011, with the first two holding the upper hand when it comes to market share. Before the year 2007 Symbian and RIM were the main mobile operating systems that powered PDAs and the Blackberry. In 2007 Apple released the first iPhone which introduced a new world of possibilities for mobile phone users. This caused Google to release its new mobile OS to rival that of Apple.
In a short span of 4 years, Symbian lost more than half of its market share, being replaced by mobile phones sporting the iOS and Google’s Android. Improvements are continuously made to these operating systems and the competition is very tight. The beauty and necessity of an OS is seen on smartphones daily. Functions like touch recognition, multitasking, word processors, maps, GPS and more are basics that come with smartphones and are appreciated by users worldwide.
The 2000s are the beginning of an era dependent on technology and constant communication between individuals. Mobile phones are practically present in every pocket of every man, woman and child all over the world. This being the case, the giants in the world of tech and mobiles have been constantly striving to come up with superior gadgets and the results are seen with every new release.
